The more you know about SEO, the better your website will perform.  Check out CS One’s top five tips for successful search engine optimisation.

  • Be unique!
Create a bold theme and invent some keywords that apply only to you.  Make sure you stand out from the crowd.  Think of Macintosh and iPod – who would have searched for those before Apple invented the products?

  • Killer keyword research.
This is the foundation of a good SEO strategy.  Don’t opt for highly competitive keywords.  Pick broader keyword terms if your site appeals to a niche market; and targeted ones if it’s a broader topic.

  • Keyword rich anchor text and domain names.
A short, easy to spell and easy to say domain name that includes your main keywords will pay off hugely.  Search engines will also rank you according to how many in-bound links you have pointing to your website.  Text used in an anchor link coming into your site should contain your keywords wherever possible.  Even better, create catchy words for your domain and in-bound links that have a built in buzz factor or hip feel, for example “mySpace” and “del.icio.us”.

  • Love those links!
Hypertext links are what search engine spiders follow to index and rank web pages.  You have to make it easy for the spiders to find you, and that means not basing your site purely on the technologies that Google spiders can’t get along with, such as Flash and heavy duty Java script.  Use these alongside your basic HTML web pages and make sure each page links to at least one other on your site.  Always create a site map and submit it to the search engines every now and then to make life easier for those spiders.  Site maps are also a great help for your site visitors.

  • Radical relevant content wins every time.
Give the search engines what they want by including keyword rich relevant content on your web pages.  Write text for humans first and search bots second.  Think about what your site visitors will want and provide it.  Use common sense to work out whether your copy looks right or whether there are too many keywords in it.  If it reads well and naturally it should be fine.  What’s more, if you produce great and relevant content then lots of other websites will create in-bound links to your website without even asking – which improves your rankings hugely.
